daron douglas
Daron Douglas hails from New Orleans, although carmen's discovered her beautiful rugs prior to our gallery adventure there. Daron's grandmother had a loom which she left for Douglas. With her grandmother's weaving equipment was a worn, brown paper bag that held a wound cotton warp and 4 balls of cotton material cut into thin strips and stitched together end to end. In the rug Daron made from these scraps, her mother recognized dresses from her childhood. Daron Douglas is part of an unbroken tradition.
She weaves rugs like her grandmother did and is faced with keeping the tradition alive - not just by continuing it and passing it on, but by allowing it to evolve. She is fascinated with water that catches light and makes designs of bright dashes, with land that stretches and rises to the sky in bands of color. To Douglas, weaving rugs is a way of playing music with those impressions...a way of bringing them underfoot into everyday life, and a way of bringing new life to her grandmother's tradition.
A well-respected musician in her spare time, Daron Douglas travels all over the world with her band making music. Douglas' rugs may be commissioned or purchased directly from our gallery.
